The next 24 hours

Model projection at 15-minute intervals, not a forecast of actual flights. Vertical axis: thousands of passengers; your device’s local time.

How is this calculated?

Scheduled commercial flights, all ages. From takeoff to landing; excludes crews, passenger-free cargo flights, private aviation, waiting and taxiing.

One central model, not live flight tracking. Statistical reference: 2024. The displayed number is not accurate to one person.

Published data

For 2024, ICAO reports about 4.7 billion passengers carried and 9,098 billion passenger-kilometres on scheduled services. One passenger-kilometre is one passenger carried one kilometre. Connections can create several boardings: these are not unique individuals.

Model assumptions

Assumed effective average speed: 700 km/h. This is an editorial assumption over the whole airborne period, not a measured worldwide average or every aircraft’s cruise speed. It converts passenger-kilometres into passenger-hours.

Airborne average = 9,098 billion ÷ 700 ÷ (366 × 24). The year 2024 has 366 days. Indicative average duration = (9,098 billion ÷ 4.7 billion) ÷ 700. No additional load factor is applied: the data already count passengers.

ICAO regional passenger-kilometre shares weight simplified hourly profiles. Representative time zones, morning/evening peaks and a common flight duration are assumptions, not observed schedules. Modelled departures still airborne are integrated, then each profile is normalised to preserve the daily mean. Regions represent carrier activity, not passenger positions in the sky.

This model retains the 2024 reference volume, without automatically extrapolating to the current year. It does not know cancellations, conflicts, weather or actual aircraft occupancy. Seasonal and weekly changes are not modelled. Display precision supports the animation and is not a scientific guarantee.
